Warton Economic Institute is formerly Shanghai Institute of Economic Development Research.

Proposed by former mayor of Shanghai, Daohan Wang and approved by the leaders in Shanghai Municipal Government, Shanghai Institute of Economic Development Research was in 1988 founded by Professor Hanyao Shen as the first all-round and comprehensive research institute on macroeconomics, regional economics and enterprises development. After the restructuring in 2002, it was renamed in Warton Comprehensive Economic Institute. For the required adaptation caused by economic globalization, director of institute Mr. Shen set up Warton Economic Institute in 2005 with the celebrity in financial sector in Hongkong, Zhaozhang Tan together, under which there were Warton Comprehensive Economic Institute, Shanghai Institute of Economic Development Research, Consultancy Services Center, Financial Research Center and Warton Investment and Financing Net etc..

Both Mr. Shen and Mr. Tan undertake the president of Warton Economic Institute. Renowned economist, Guangyuan Yu is honorary president and Mr. Gao Shangquan works as a consultant in institute.

Warton Economic Institute has been involved in a series of research on national and Shanghai development planning: from Pudong development program planning to Shanghai high-tech unconventional development planning; from assessment on development prospect in cultural industry to theoretical research and practical investigation on industrial and environmental development……Warton Economic Institute has made a great contribution.

Warton Economic Institute also contributes a lot in the field of theoretical research. The director of Institute, Mr. Shen Hanyao obtained the highest award in Chinese economic community – Sun Yefang economic prize because of his achievement in researching the hidden unemployment problem in China , which promotes China 's reform process. The “Forum of Modern Market Economy” and “China Business Top 100” are renowned at home and abroad for effectively promoting the communication and research of international economic theory. Many domestic and international well-known economists (including several Nobel Prize Laureates in Economics), many Chinese senior government leaders and distinguished entrepreneurs have ever made a speech at the forum.

Warton Economic Institute exerts its strength in theoretical research, serves “Reform and Opening” and the business practice. It provides consultancy services in some important topics such as the “development of non-iron, non-steel industry” for Baoshan Iron and Steel Group, the restructuring and IPO for Hualian Company, mergers and reorganization of China Eastern Airlines Group, Hutchison Whampoa's investment in China, operations of Shanghai 900 home, Mckinsey's entrance in Chinese market etc. and makes a successful introduction of the first high-rise, Shanghai World Financial Center (under construction).

“Modern Market Economics Weekly” and “Economic Times”, edited and published by Warton Economic Institute have a considerable social impact. These two magazines has ever given out early warning before the outbreak of Asia financial crisis and published the first report on transformation of state-owned assets to private assets. In recent years, they broke the example given by two American magazines “Wealth” and “Business Week” and published the “ China listed 100” , which was ranked by total profits and drew the social attention because of its scientificity and reasonality.
